Plan Now to Sow in the Future

A WILD OAT FOUNDATION PROGRAM THAT ROTATES CHEMISTRY NOW SO THAT YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LATER
The Problem: Wild oat tolerance and resistance is coming. Ensuring we continue to have effective herbicide options in the future requires planning now. WSSA Group 1 and Group 2 herbicides are valuable tools we need to keep to control wild oat populations. For more than a decade, Canada has been tracking wild oat resistance through a survey, attached are the results in Alberta. As there is no survey tracking in the United States, this could be the only indication for U.S. farmers on Group 1 & 2 wild oat population spread dynamics. In addition, reducing wild oat competition early will allow for yield protection later in the season.

The Solution: Ensuring growers can still rely on Group 1 and 2, chemistry requires planning now. Far-GO® is a group 15 herbicide, which means it works on wild oats differently and will control wild oats preemerge that have shown tolerance/resistance to Group 1 or 2 herbicides.
ROTATE FIELDS OR USE FAR-GO® IN SEQUENTIAL APPLICATION PROGRAMS WITH THESE COMPOUNDS FOR MAXIMUM CONTROL OF UNWANTED GRASSES:
HOW TO INTRODUCE FAR-GO®
Target 25% of the farm acreage per year to treat, so as a whole farm practice to reduce wild oats, it is ¼ the cost for the whole farm, so a $14 - $20.00/acre treatment would really be $3.50-$5.00/acre on a farm.
- Section (640 acres
- 4-year plan
- Introduce different mode of action

HOW TO PROPERLY APPLY FAR-GO® FOR BEST RESULTS:
Prepare soil for best chemical to ground contact - when soil is about 70% soil or better with no large soil clods or lumps. Apply Far-GO® at a rate based upon crop and timing. Following Far-GO application incorporate with a heavy harrow to a depth of 1/2 - 1 inch (harrow setting at 1 - 2 inches). After Far-GO application seed your crop at depth below the herbicide treatment layer - greater than 1/2 or 1 inch. In addition to Far-GO, Gowan USA also manufactures Avadex® MA herbicide. A dry formulation for no-till situations when a Group 15 herbicide needs to be applied. In addition to wild oats, Far-GO will provide suppression of Brome spp.
